Common Dog Training Misconceptions

  • There is no such thing as a “bad dog.” Dogs who are given this label are usually misunderstood or have received improper dog training. For example, naughty behavior typically surfaces because the dogs’ needs are not being met or there is a communication breakdown between the dog and his family members. • Dog training is not about teaching your dog tricks. Dog trainers teach your pet good behaviors and eliminate the not so good behaviors to make life with your dog more enjoyable. In addition, dog training can save your dogs life. A good recall ensures that your dog comes to you immediately, every time you call. A reliable sit/stay can make the difference between life and death if your pet is in the street or other dangerous situation. A reliable “leave it” cue ensures that he doesn’t ingest a dangerous object or toxic substance.
  • Dog trainers do not “break” dogs. Dog trainers who use Positive Training Methodology, do not beat dogs into submission, break their psyche or their spirits. In fact, it’s rare to find a dog trainer who still utilizes Domination Theory embodied in these undesirable techniques. Training is a fun and rewarding experience for you and your pet, and when positive methods are used, your dog will perform because he wants to please you, not because he’s afraid of you.
  • Dogs are never too old to learn. Dogs continually learn throughout their lifetime and can unlearn behaviors as well. Read more How Dogs Learn.
